It’s official, Florida Public Service Commission has Approved Net Metering

Florida Public Service Commission Approves Net Metering and Interconnection Rule

Tuesday March 4th 2008 Florida’s Public Service commission (PSC) has voted and approved net metering and expedited interconnection standards.

The rule was made to promote grid-tie and interconnected customers (Wind and Solar Electric power production) and reduce costs for those customers by allowing them to realize a faster payback and a better return on their investment into renewable energy technologies.

It further promotes renewable energy by expanding eligible systems from 10KW to a full 2MW and expanded the systems to include not only solar electric (Photo voltaic) but all renewable technologies.

“This rule is expected to increase the development of renewable generation in Florida, which will enhance fuel diversity and reliability,” said PSC Chairman Matthew M. Carter II. “Customer-owned renewable generation also effectively acts as a conservation measure by reducing the amount of electricity purchased from utilities.”

Bravo! Thank you for adopting such a progressive net-metering rule. You’ve brought Florida into the 21st Century. This is the best news I’ve heard in this field in many years.

is there a way to find out what this approval actual intells??? meaning 2MegaWatts max? can you go into more detail on what this really means? Thanks

Yes, it means 2 Mega Watts Max, any system from 10KW, 100KW and all the way up to 2 Mega Watts is included in this new rule. Additionally it’s no longer strictly solar but wind and other types of renewable energy generation as well.

does net metering mean I wil get credit for extra energy sent to the grid if I generate more than I use–and will the power company pay in cash or credits?

Comment on March 18th, 2009.

Yeah that’s what it means, although the laws vary from state to state so check with your state. In Florida it’s a credit until the end of the year and then the balance is returned to you as cash.

So how exactly does it work in Florida does it roll your system back or does it just credit you at the end of the year. Does anyone know if FPL (Florida Power & Light) has any specs on netmetering?

Comment on November 17th, 2009.

It continues to roll over month to month, crediting you until the end of the year. Any remaining credits are paid out at the end of the year. You can see FPL’s FAQ on Net metering here:
